Travel Writing - who to approach and how?

I would like to freelance as a travel writer. I enjoy travelling, photography and writing and would love to be able to combine all of them.

I have a copy of the writers market with lists of magazine publishers in the UK. How do I approach the editors? Phone/Email…what should I say?

Thanks

You are going to have to do some sample writing that you can send around. Pax-C

Here is a link to an up and coming travel writer: In the interview he explains that before he got a book deal he made zines at the copy store and then distributed them himself. I doesn’t mention anything about what he charge for them. He probably handed them out for free just to get his name out there. He built up a following enough to catch the eye of the local paper. Then he went on to a book deal. Like Persiphone said, you’re going to need to have some evidence of your skill. I bet travel writing is especially hard to break into, so you’ve really got to put a lot of energy and personality into your writing. The guy in the link I gave you speaks on paper in such a way that you feel like you’re talking to him. You’ve really got to connect with the reader if you want them to be interested in a travel guide.
