This racket that protects the few wealthy owners of Nevada’s taxi and limo companies needs changing. This industry needs to be made a free market a allow anyone who can provide capital to enter the market. I am interested in starting a ground roots effort to change this corrupt banana-republic type alliance between business and government. I am looking for ideas and people to assist me. Thanks. My experience in Las Vegas has taught me to rely upon the very thing you are against. I know that if I take a taxi, and that taxi charges me MORE than a particular amount to get to the airport for the main strip, that I can refuse to pay it, and am to turn in the color of the cab, cabbies name if I see it, and number of the cab if I have it. If I don’t have all those things, I can just turn in the cab’s color, and the time I went to the airport from whatever hotel. The law is, at this time, that only a small amount may be charged by the taxi drivers for getting one to or from the airport. If they charge more than that, they are in trouble and can lose their license. I don’t see a problem here. I had one cab driver charge me a whole lot more than is allowed, and I turned him in. The law is to protect the citizens who are visiting and have no clue as to what the price should be. I always ask the bellman to ask the driver how much it will cost, now, before I get into a taxi, there.

I totally agree, I operate a limousine company in columbus ohio and my dream was to move to vegas. I realized what you just explained. that’s not fair, it’s like a mafia.

Who the hell said it should be a free market? You want a free market, find another country. No matter where you go (not just Vegas) cab companies as well as utilities companies and all other specific local services are protected by the county.
If you want to get a license you have to bring something new to the table, differentiate your product (eg: offer a cab service that caters to the elderly or handicapped). If you go into it with the free market speech you are going to have you a** handed to you.
