To alert consumers of the product the company is selling.

I don’t know. I think that busnesses do it just because they want old crusty money.

yes. people would not know what is out there unless it is advertised. Not everyone has a cell, not everyone reads the paper, watches TV, has an email, etc.

Some purchases are made from these sources, but more than anything it’s branding. When you go to purchase a product if you don’t know about it you won’t purchase it. If it’s something you need, then your more likly to buy a brand that you know than one you don’t.
There are subliminal issues too that make you feel like you need a certain product. Advertising and branding are big business because if you want a product to succeed, people need to be aware of it.

To let people know a product is available for sale. If companies relied solely on word-of-mouth, they wouldn’t sell very much.

WE don’t need them. but companies who depend on selling their product do. or at least they think they do. hopefully, we can convince them that they can sell a product by having opt-in advertising (like how some people deliberately watch commercials cuz they think they’re clever–make them all that way).

unfortunately, people DO buy from spam email and other forms of advertising, which is why people are willing to continue to spend money, time and effort on promotion.
If the advertisements didn’t work, they would stop.
Spam is the hardest to stop because spammers steal other’s resources to deliver their messages, therefore it doesnt’ cost very much to do, so they can sned spam over and over again with only a few customers needed to make a profit.

Because of our economy. Companies have to sell to make a profit and to attract consumers they have to spend money on stuff like that. Despite costs most companies that market inteligently and often beat out their competition. Walmart is a great example as well as pretty well every company in the US. They started out as rather small business, but due to their ability to attract consumers they were able to turn a profit, and become corporate powerhouses. So, yes people really buy from companies that advertise. Look at high school it’s a perfect example. People like me who buy non-namebrand clothes are looked down upon because we don’t spen our money on the company that has awesome comercials, and hot spokespeople.
Oh, also sometimes comercials are the only good thing on TV. If you don’t believe me try watching day time TV with no cable.

I totally agree with RyanSmith. You would never know what products are on the market, without advertisment. (think about it) how did you find out about Yahoo Answers?. ADVERTISMENT! (smile)

you need advertisements to tell you that you’re inferior unless you by their products.
It’s what makes this economy work.

Marketing is often defined as the four Ps: Product, Price, Placement and Promotion. Advertising and commercials are part of Publicity. They increase product awareness, alterting consumers to the wide range of options available. I have heard some marketing executives say that a 2% success rate for spam-based advertising (in particular, physical junk mail) is considered to be a success.
A huge part of advertising is emotional. It is often claimed that Listerine didn’t invent mouthwash, but rather halitosis (bad breath). With enough advertisements addressing the issue of bad breath, people became paranoid about their own breath and started buying mouthwash. Similarly, perhaps if enough men receive bulk e-mails about penile enhancement, they too may become insecure and look to expensive new products and services to feel more confident.

In order to inform the ultimate consumer of new products available for purchase. Look around you for a second and think look at some items you may own. How did you stumble upon these items. If it’s word of mouth or you found it at while out shopping marketing is still involved. Word of Mouth is a form of marketing, if you found it at the mall then why were you in that store. Somehow that store created a way to draw you in and get you buy their products and not their consumers(another result of marketing)
