our dog passed away on memorial day, so we are now in the market for a new puppy. our 13 yr. old daughter would like to train this puppy for agility. small to medium size preferred as we don’t have the space for a large dog. please feel free to email me if you have puppies or know of puppies in the southwest michigan area. thanks!
i have already checked out these places. no luck. they are either way to expensive to adopt or too large. why would a person pay that kind of money to adopt a dog if the rescue group can come take it back anytime they feel like it? we take very good care of our dogs wouldn’t have anything to worry about anyway, but why take that chance? you have all this money wrapped up in a dog that can be taken from you without any chance of getting your money back. not me! otherwise i would prefer to adopt.
this puppy will be for 4-H agility obedience. possibly ukc agility trials. it would also be a much loved member of the family. we don’t care what the breed is, only that it must be small to small/medium. we don’t care if it is a purebred or a mix breed.
we already own a jack russel. she is very dog aggressive, so she is not suitable for agility. she will get along with any dog we bring into the house, but outside the house she is very aggressive towards other animals.
to sniffydogs: I AM NOT LOOKING FOR A BACKYARD BREEDER STARTER KIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I just don’t have the money for the initial cost of an expensive puppy! I know the what it costs to keep a dog. I’ve had them all my life! I just don’t think its right that you pay out all this money to adopt, get it spayed or nuetered then they say they can come take the animal back anytime they want without a refund of all the money you have put into it. If they want to find homes for these dogs, maybe they should change some of their policies make it easier for people to adopt. I can go to the pound, pick out a dog for $25.00, get it fixed not have to worry about anyone coming for home visits taking them away when ever they feel like it. I just wish the pound had puppies. Otherwise that is where I would go.

Your local SPCA. There are plenty of abandoned animals that need your help. Do them a favour and bring them into your home.

Cocker spaniels and border collies are great at agility. Try looking on petfinder.com. There are tons of rescue dogs and puppies there.

Finding puppies on the internet is not usually the best way.
I think a Sheltie would be perfect for your daughter — they are small/medium sized and they excel in agility.
I found this website for you. It is the Sheltie club of Michigan:

I don’t know about southwest michigan, but there are tons of pets at rescues on that you could get. It’s puppy season and I know there are lots of dogs that need a good and loving home. You can even get purebred dogs. If a dog is in another area of the country, sometimes there are transports that can move a dog from one area to another.
There are lots of Jack Russell Terrier mixes that I see all the time (I am on several ‘rescue’ email lists). I would think a JRT mix would be great for what you are looking for!
Good luck!

you may want to consider a young adult (6 months or older) instead of a young puppy. You would know an adults temperment better than a young puppy. It would be easier to determine if the dog has the attention span and drive for agility than getting a young puppy.
There are plenty of young adults in shelters too! People get cute puppies on impulse, then dont train them. They dump them in shelters when they are no longer a cute little puppy.

check the local animal shelter…there are always dogs there. We just got another puppy and she came spayed, with a license, all her shots including a micro chip for $42. We have adopted 3 dogs from the pound so far and they’ve all been the very best mutts we ever had

Yeah. Good luck pal! Dogs cost money:
No rescue will consider you for a pup because you basically are looking for a backyard breeder starter kit.
